Getting My First Car

Last night, after having a quick drink with a couple of friends, I decided to hit the road back home early. Along the way, a startling thought suddenly dawned upon me.

I was hit by the obvious realisation that I’m now driving my very own convertible… Something I wouldn’t even thought possible, a few years ago…

In my mind’s eye, I looked back at the things I did, leading to my achievements… I wondered aloud to myself, “How in the world did I do all that?” It almost seemed like a miracle.

It felt as if it was just yesterday, when I made a commitment to myself that I’ll get my first car by the end of the year… It has been five years since, when I finally achieved that goal.

Back then, it was just a regular Daihatsu YRV. But I remembered being over the hills when I put the down payment for the car. (It’s not cheap buying a car in Singapore, you know…)
It was definitely one of the proudest moments of my life.

From that day onwards, a lot of things seem a lot easier to achieve. I knew that as long as I set my mind to it… I could achieve anything I want.

And all I did was to believe… and I went on doing the things that eventually led me to accomplish my goal.

Whenever I feel down, or when things don’t seem to be working out. I would always remind myself about the day when I got my first car… the obstacles and challenges I overcame to finally experience the sheer delight of resting my hands on that steering wheel

Like a turbo-charged engine, it gives me the extra boost of motivation, keeping myself in track to whatever I was doing.

I’m sure at some point you’ll find yourself hitting that rough patch too.

Whenever you feel like throwing in the towel, remind yourself about the last achievement that took you the pains to get it. How it felt, when it finally became a reality.

Sometimes, it’s not about doing ‘big’ things… but the ‘small little’ things that you do that add up to you achieving something great.

What I want to share with you is, anything is possible as long as you believe in yourself. And then set your mind to achieve it.

2 cars

Now, I own two cars, a yellow Convertible and a red Mazda RX 8 sports car, which I occasionally take its speed to the limits, at the Sepang race track in Malaysia.

And I know that, none of it would have been possible if I didn’t believe that I can do it.

Hi Jaz, well done and you should be proud of your achievements. I’m a bit older, perhaps I could be your grandfather. I also look back at past steps in my life
to motivate me and propel me forward to the next challenge. I never forget when we got married, when our first child was born, our first vegie patch, my first solo in an aircraft, our first business, becoming president of a Rotary Club, the day we climbed Mt.Bogong’s infamous Staircase, the day my students won the solar car race, the day we made our first wooden cow and so many more precious moments. This is not to brag, but to entice other readers to look at their past life and use the many achievements, no matter how small or big, to get motivated, take positive action and move forward another step. Wishing you well, Henryb.

Yes I can remember the first card I bought . It was a new 1956 Ford Mainline stick shift. The salesman had been a friend of the family for many years. Back then there wasn’t much mark up on cars. He told me that he would give me the best
deal in town. I had already made up my mind that I wanted a Ford. I wanted the one that was two doors and had two tone paint cream and light green. And of course I wanted fender skirts which I would have to pay extra for. Well Mister White
said he would throw them in for no cost and have the painted. We went in to do the paper work and the car came to $3,678.51. I told Mister White that I didn’t want my payments to be over $40.00 a month and for no more than 3 years.
He worked with the paper work for over a hour and then took it into the Manager Of New Car Sales and he was gone for
so long I didn’t think they were going to approve the paperwork. At last Mr. White came back with a big smile on his face.
He sat down and said this is what we can do. I can let you have the car and you can have the 3 year payment plan, but
it is going to cost you $43.63 a month. We are going to give you top dollar on your trade. I signed the paperwork and I
waited about an hour for them to service the car. I was so proud of that car. I drove it for 2 1/2 years and I got orders
to go to German. I had joined the Air Force about six month after I got the car. Talk about sick I really could stand put-ing a for sale sign on it. It sold with in 48 hours. It was funny because I got more than I payed for it new….

That’s a nice one John. $40/month… I don’t think we can find this price anymore.
