Cold calling is a horror for most people. I can totally identify with that because there were a couple of times during my network marketing career that I was so scared at picking up the phone, that it seemed to weight a TON! As the name implies, cold calling can really send a shiver down a person’s spine.
If you want to learn the secret on how to cold call then let me share with you my personal experiences how I managed to overcome cold calling trauma.
Firstly, I managed to overcome the mental barrier that my network marketing business is ‘cheating’ others. Why do I say cheating? Even though we are all consciously clear about the reason why we are in network marketing, we feel ‘guilty’ that we are calling our friends and petrified of the rejection. In actual fact, we fail to remember, subconsciously, that our business is all about HELPING other people. When you are very, very clear that your business is about helping others achieve time and financial freedom, why are you afraid to approach your friend to join your business?
Now that you have overcome the mental barrier, you need to be able to find a relating or linking point to your prospect. Now your prospect could be a close friend or casual acquaintance. When it comes to approaching a close friend, just be natural and call him our for a drink or go to McDonalds or something. But when it comes to a casual acquaintance or close to a total stranger, you can use this strategy to cold call effectively:
- Find out someone you both commonly know or something you and the prospect have in common.
- Try and remember the first and the last name of the prospect.
- When they pick up the phone, ask them is this Joe (first name example).
- When they say yes, repeat their FULL name – Joe Smith (first and last name combined). By now, you have 2 yeses.
- Ask them are you a friend of (your common friend). By then, you would have ‘triggered’ three yeses and it takes away the ‘stranger calling’ defense of the prospect and you will be able to talk about your opportunity in an easier way.
Contrary to popular opinion, cold calling isn’t something that just comes naturally. You will be able to train your cold calling skill by doing it over and over again. The more you cold call, the better you will get and you will increase your chances for success, just like how I did it.
